Forrest General Names DAISY Award Winner For October

Naomi Bridgers, a unit-based educator for the Emergency Room, was named the recipient of the October DAISY Award. The award is presented monthly to a deserving nurse or nurses who exemplify clinical expertise and compassionate care and is recognized as a role model in the nursing community.

Bridgers, who has worked at Forrest General for four years, said she truly has the best of both worlds being the ER educator. “I get to educate staff, which I love, but also have the opportunity to work alongside staff and help care for patients when needed.”

In her job as an educator with the Emergency Department staff, Bridgers works with new hires in ED RN orientation sessions where they discuss ED processes, high risk medications, and review the most critical patient conditions and treatments. She also helps with Emergency Severity Index (ESI) training for assigning patient acuity and triaging and ensures all shifts are educated on any new ER processes. She teaches Moderate Sedation, Code Cart Review, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for staff hospital-wide and is also a Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) instructor for Forrest General and regional classes when needed.

Surrounded by her co-workers, Bridgers said it is always a good feeling to be recognized and appreciated by your peers.

Education Director Amber Chancelor said Bridgers is very dedicated to Forrest General and the Emergency Room. “She is quick to lend a helping hand and is very driven and cares so much about people and the job she does,” said Chancelor. “She is very caring and one of the hardest working nurses I’ve ever met. We are so thankful to have her on our team here at FGH.”

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in California by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. During his eight-week hospital stay, his family was impressed by the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to him but to everyone in the family. They created the DAISY Award in his memory to recognize those nurses who make a big difference in the lives of so many people.

Forrest General Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award partner and recognizes one of its nurses with this special honor every month. Nurses are nominated by patients, and family members, as well as other healthcare professionals. The winner is then selected by a board of healthcare workers. Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a public ceremony in her/his unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, A Healer’s Touch, handcrafted by a tribe in Zimbabwe.
